Our tour ended, and we began our long drive back to Fairbanks. After the depressing Prudhoe Bay visit, we needed something to raise our spirits. Fifteen miles down the road, nature came through for us with the first baby caribou sighting of the trip. She was adorable! Adult caribou are somewhat tolerant of human activity (we even saw a few walk through the oil field), but when babies are involved, their behavior changes, and they become much more skittish. In this instance, the mother took one look at us and quickly led her young one away.

Then, later in the day, we pulled off the road and went for a walk that took us up a flower-covered hill. Thin clouds swirled in the deep blue sky, and from the hilltop, we could see for miles over the flat tundra—all the way to the snow-covered Brooks Range. Perhaps best of all, the wind was blowing just enough to keep the bugs away. We sat for at least an hour, enjoying the view and the special feeling that comes with being so far north.

Sharing the hill with us was an Arctic ground squirrel, unconcerned with our presence. When I stretched out on the ground and aimed my camera, he posed for some fun pictures. Eventually we pulled ourselves away and continued on to Arctic Getaway Cabins for another night’s stay.
